Lack of stable housing can make recovery from co-occurring substance abuse and mental health issues an endless struggle.  Each year we celebrate the individuals and organizations that help individuals with co-occurring issues find or keep housing in San Mateo County.

We invite you to nominate a person (colleague, landlord, property manager, case manager…) or a program for the 13th Annual Housing Heroes Awards.

Submit a nomination online by completing the Electronic Nomination Form.

You can also complete the nomination form and send per instructions on the form. Deadline for submissions is Monday, September 14.

The awards ceremony will be held virtually on Tuesday, October 29, 2020, 9 AM at the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors’ Meeting. Meeting link here.

Organized by the San Mateo County Change Agent Housing Committee.

The San Mateo County Housing Authority will accept completed ONLINE applications for the 1 BEDROOM waitlist for Menlo Gateway from August 3 to August 14, 2020. All applications should be submitted online at: http://www.mysmchousing.com/

Caltrain Board to Consider Affordability Requirement for Housing Near Transit

Staff for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, which operates Caltrain, recommended requiring that at least 20% of units in the future residential projects on agency land at any station be affordable.

Affordable housing projects have the potential to add badly needed housing in an area where people are being forced into tent encampments and van living.

Housing Heroes Awards – October 24

The 12th Annual Housing Hero Awards celebration recognizes community partners who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in providing and/or maintaining housing for people in San Mateo County with mental health and/or substance use conditions. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2019, 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, Redwood Shores Library Community Room, 399 Marine Parkway, Redwood City.

Affordable Housing Available in Redwood City

Affordable Housing Unit Waitlist Opening 6/3/19-6/14/19

The Housing Authority of the County of San Mateo will be accepting online applications between 6/3/19 and 6/14/19 for the Mosaic Garden Project-Based waiting list. 

Mosaic Garden is located at 3770 Rolison Road in Redwood City.  With the exception of one 1-bedroom unit, all units at Mosaic Garden are studios. The property is currently undergoing rehab that, based on MidPen Housing’s best estimate, will be completed in late September 2019.

Interested parties may register online at www.mysmchousing.com during the opening period.

Affordable Housing Unit Breaks Ground in Redwood City

Officials and developers broke ground Thursday on a much needed 67-unit  apartment in North Fair Oaks at 2821 El Camino Real.  The units are expected to become home to veterans, low-income families and those with developmental disabilities. The project leverages a portion of the more than $100 million county officials have committed to affordable housing projects — in large part through the voted-approved sales tax Measure K.  Read the full story in the Daily Journal.

cartoon housesThis afternoon, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services will join the Change Agent Housing Committee in recognizing San Mateo County’s “Housing Heroes.” The Housing Heroes program honors community partners and colleagues who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in providing or maintaining housing for individuals with mental health and/or substances use issues in San Mateo County.

Promoting health and housing stability helps not only these individuals but also their families and the broader San Mateo County community. Read more here.

For many years, conversations around posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have primarily focused on military veteran populations returning from war. Keeping in mind that exposure to life-threatening, traumatic experiences are not just limited to military veterans, efforts are being made to shed light on other groups that are also impacted by PTSD. One of those groups includes students of color in historically marginalized communities.

1 in 3 students of color living in historically marginalized communities display symptoms of mild to severe PTSD.

In other words, youth of color are twice as likely to experience mild to severe symptoms of PTSD compared to soldiers returning from live combat.

Poverty, institutional racism, homicide, and neighborhood disinvestment represent some of many exposures linked to PTSD among students of color. However, the conversation doesn’t end there.

PTSD assumes a person will experience physical, mental, and emotional distress after being exposed to a traumatic life experience. For students of color, that exposure is continuous. Living in a historically marginalized community means that students will return to and experience traumatic events/conditions such as poverty, institutional racism, homicide, and neighborhood disinvestment, on a daily basis. PTSD on its own does not capture the complexity of those experiences. Thus, students of color living in communities with high exposures to such conditions may actually be experiencing Complex Posttraumatic Disorder, or CPTSD.
