San Mateo County: New Order Requires Face Masks

San Mateo County Health Officer Dr. Scott Morrow has issued a new order requiring members of the public and workers at essential businesses to wear face coverings outside the home for certain activities and in places of business. The order will be enforced starting 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 and will remain in effect until it is amended or superseded by the health officer. The order is also set to take effect in the other Bay Area counties.

Who Needs to Wear the Masks?

Members of the public inside or in line to enter essential businesses such as grocery stores and laundromats, when they are in hospitals, clinics, COVID-19 testing locations, dentists and facilities providing veterinary care, and when they are waiting for or riding on public transportation, including ride shares, Caltrain and BART.

Wearing a face covering is recommended but not required for outdoor recreation such as walking, hiking, bicycling or running, though social distancing requirements still hold. Children under 2 should not wear the masks because of the risk of suffocation and any child under 12 is not required.

What Kind of Masks?

Coverings can be factory-made or from ordinary household materials and can be any type of cloth, fabric or other soft material that covers the nose and mouth and surrounding areas of the lower face. Scarves, bandanas, neck gaiters, homemade coverings made from T-shirt material or other fabric and held with rubber bands are appropriate. Purchased masks may also be used but should not be medical grade, such as N95 respirators, which are in short supply and prioritized for health care workers.

4/20- MHFC State of Emergency COVID-19: Intimate Compassionate Understanding

Rescheduled to Monday April 20, 2020 (12:30pm-2:30pm), MHFC’s virtual event is for all those interested in preserving the lives of African Americans. They are especially reaching out to African American pastors, clergy, faith leaders and other stakeholders to offer essential culturally responsive mental health tools to support those experiencing increased anxiety, depression and feelings of grief due to the isolation and loss of physical connection.

Session will include discussions on “how to be there when you’re not there”, connecting our community to economic opportunities and sharing of resources to better position our members for compassionate care within our faith communities before there is a need to utilize local emergency rooms. We are aware of an increase in police responses to mental health resources to lower the risk of this potentially dangerous option.

We recognize our Faith and ability to congregate has been a historical protective factor that has sustained us. For us to bridge the gap and challenges of social distancing and our inability to meet together it is critical that we access and apply tools that will enable us to remain a constant source of support for individuals living in isolation.

RSVP by email to mhfc@tricitiescdc.com to receive the password and join us for this critical time of Connection, Compassion and Caring. We want our community to know that I.C.U. Please access the login information from the attached flier. “

It is widely understood that when America has a cold the African American community has pneumonia. Now that American have pneumonia, let’s prevent African Americans from being placed on life support.” – Gigi Crowder L.E.

Hotline for California Seniors to Stay Connected Amid COVID-19

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the “Stay Home. Save Lives. Check In.” campaign to combat social isolation and food insecurity among seniors vulnerable to COVID-19 in California.

The Governor also announced the creation of a statewide hotline — 833-544-2374 — in coordination with the non-profit local 2-1-1 systems, so that Californians have a one-stop shop to answer their questions and get assistance during this crisis. The 2-1-1 system is able to help older Californians access grocery and medication delivery while staying at home.

COVID-19: County of San Mateo Data as of 3/31/2020

  • Due to the current testing capacity, the number of cases detected through testing represents only a small portion of the total number of likely cases in the County. This means the number of cases by age group is skewed toward those who are high risk and tested.
  • COVID-19 data are reported as timely, accurately, and completely as we have available. Data are updated as we receive information that is more complete and will change over time as we learn more. Data reported as of 3/31.
  • Cases are lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases reported to San Mateo County Public Health by providers, commercial laboratories, and results reported through the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE).
