研究顯示出詢問有風險人士是否有自殺傾向不會增加對方自殺的機會或提高自殺的念頭。事實上是相反,研究發現承認及談論自殺話題有機會不增反降自殺的意念。

詢問朋友「你是否正在考慮自殺?」幫助你向他們傳達你可以用開放,不批判

及支持性的態度傾談自殺。用這直接及沒有成見的問題去打開對方心扉聊聊他們情緒上的痛苦,亦可以令當事人看看需要採取怎樣的後續步驟。你還可以問「你有多難受?」和「我可以怎樣幫你?」,避免答應替對方保守他們有自殺想法這事為秘密。

用直接及開放態度談論自殺是很重要的。「你是否正在考慮傷害自己」不夠「你是否正在考慮自殺」來得直接。
