September is National Recovery Month, and it is important to recognize the hard work and achievements of those individuals who are in recovery for mental health and substance use challenges. However, for every person in recovery, there are many more who do not seek treatment due to the stigma of mental health or substance use conditions among their family, friends and community. Research has found that because of stigma, only 1 out of every 10 people who need treatment for alcohol or other drug use seek help. One way of reducing stigma is through the sharing of personal stories of recovery.
Faces of Hope is a photo exhibit of San Mateo County residents who have experienced mental health and substance use challenges, and includes their stories of hope. The exhibit is part of Stigma Free San Mateo County, and its efforts to reduce stigma in the County. This photo exhibit will be on display throughout the month of September at the Hall of Justice building, located at 400 County Center in Redwood City.
