On January 27, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors reviewed and approved the MHSA Three-Year Plan & Annual Update, which has now been submitted to the State of California.
What does this mean for San Mateo County? State funding, from the passing of Proposition 63 in 2004 imposing a 1% tax on personal income in excess of $1M, has been prioritized for the next three years of services, programs and efforts to reduce the long-term impacts resulting from untreated serious mental illness in San Mateo County.
Thank you to the close to 300 stakeholders, consumers/clients, families, community members, partner organizations and BHRS staff that participated in the planning process!
A few key highlights:
- Data through December 2013, demonstrate notable improvements for Full Service Partnership (FSP) participants across many factors including decreased hospitalizations, homelessness, psychiatric emergency visits, arrests, school suspensions and others.
- A qualitative assessment of our FSPs demonstrated overall positive impact and some continued challenges that will help guide our future FSP development, funding allocations and improvements.
- Prevention and Early Intervention programs served over 1,000 clients and reached over 3,000 individuals through community outreach efforts, events and training. An evaluation of these programs is underway!
- Two new programs, the Chinese Outreach Worker Pilot project and the Health Ambassador Program were launched
- Total Wellness – an innovative project – received national recognition for improving preventable health conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol for behavioral health clients.
- An updated Workforce Education and Training Plan was developed with the input of close to 400 stakeholders, consumers/clients and BHRS staff, identifying top training priorities.
- There is a new proposed housing development underway for individuals with severe mental illness
- 8 new programs or expansions were prioritized for funding in the next three years
